Denali is the highest mountain located in a U.S. national park.
The Alaska peak rises to 20,310 feet above sea level and is the highest mountain in North America. It is the centerpiece of Denali National Park and Preserve, one of the major protected areas administered by the National Park Service.
The mountain was widely known as Mount McKinley for much of the 20th century. The federal government restored the name Denali in 2015, reflecting the Koyukon Athabascan name used for the mountain for centuries.
Mount Saint Elias, Mount Rainier, and Mount Whitney are all major U.S. peaks, but none is higher than Denali. The mountain’s extreme relief, glaciers, and weather make climbing it a demanding expedition.
