What is the height of Ulm Minster's spire in meters?

The story behind the answer

The spire of Ulm Minster is 161.53 metres high.

Ulm Minster stands in Ulm, Baden-Württemberg, Germany, and is a Gothic church now belonging to the Evangelical Church in Germany. Its enormous central steeple makes it the tallest church tower in the world, although the building is often casually called a cathedral even though it is a parish church rather than a bishop’s seat.

Construction began in 1377, but the project was interrupted for centuries. The church was finally completed on 31 May 1890, when the Gothic Revival era finished the tower and spire according to the medieval design. The completed steeple reaches 161.53 metres, usually rounded to 161.5 metres.

The figure is sometimes confused with the height of Cologne Cathedral, whose paired towers reach about 157 metres. Ulm’s height was deliberately intended to surpass Cologne, making the distinction between a single tower and a pair of cathedral spires especially useful.
