What is the height in meters of the nave vault of Amiens Cathedral?

The story behind the answer

The nave vault of Amiens Cathedral rises 42.3 meters above the floor. That extraordinary height places Amiens among the boldest achievements of French High Gothic architecture.

Construction of the present cathedral began in 1220, after an earlier church was damaged by fire. The builders drew on designs associated with Chartres and developed a spacious, strongly unified interior. Its tall arcade, triforium and clerestory create a three-level elevation that guides the eye upward toward the ribbed vault.

The vault height was made possible by pointed arches, rib vaulting and external flying buttresses. These systems channel the roof’s outward thrust into the buttresses, allowing the walls to be opened for large windows rather than built as massive solid barriers.

A common mix-up is to confuse the nave-vault measurement with the cathedral’s exterior height or with the height of its walls beneath the vaults, often rounded to about 42 meters. Amiens also influenced later Gothic buildings, including Cologne Cathedral, whose nave proportions were closely based on it.
