What is the height of 'The Starry Night' in centimeters?

The story behind the answer

The Starry Night is 73.7 centimeters high. Its full dimensions are 73.7 by 92.1 centimeters, or approximately 29 by 36¼ inches, according to the Museum of Modern Art, which owns the painting.

Van Gogh painted the work in oil on canvas in June 1889 during his stay at the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole asylum in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. The relatively modest physical size contrasts with the enormous visual space of the composition: the turbulent sky occupies much of the canvas, while the village and landscape sit below it.

The 73.7-centimeter measurement is the height, not the width. The 92.1-centimeter figure is the horizontal dimension, so reversing the two numbers is a common mistake. Another source of confusion is that reproductions, posters, and murals often enlarge the image dramatically while keeping its proportions.

The painting entered MoMA’s collection in 1941 through the Lillie P. Bliss Bequest, after passing through several private owners in Europe.
