The Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro is 30 metres tall, excluding its pedestal. The monument stands atop Corcovado mountain and looks eastward over Rio de Janeiro, with its outstretched arms forming a 28-metre span.
The reinforced-concrete statue was constructed between 1922 and 1931 and faced with soapstone tiles. French-Polish sculptor Paul Landowski contributed to the design, while Brazilian engineer Heitor da Silva Costa led the project. Romanian sculptor Gheorghe Leonida created the face.
The full monument is often reported as 38 metres high because its pedestal adds another 8 metres. That is the source of a common answer conflict: 30 metres describes the statue itself, while 38 metres describes the statue together with its base. Since the question asks for the statue’s height, 30 metres is the standard answer.
Christ the Redeemer was dedicated on 12 October 1931. It became an internationally recognised symbol of Rio and Brazil and was selected as one of the New7Wonders of the World in 2007.
