What is the full name of Tolkien’s loyal hobbit companion Sam in The Lord of the Rings?

The story behind the answer

Tolkien’s loyal hobbit companion Sam in The Lord of the Rings is Samwise Gamgee.

Samwise, usually called Sam, begins the story as Frodo Baggins’s gardener and becomes his closest companion during the journey to destroy the One Ring. His loyalty is central to the plot: he continues helping Frodo even after the journey becomes physically and emotionally overwhelming.

Sam carries Frodo up Mount Doom after Frodo has been weakened by the Ring and by the journey. He also briefly bears the Ring after Shelob attacks Frodo. Tolkien presents Sam’s courage as practical, humble, and rooted in friendship rather than ambition.

Sam’s surname, Gamgee, came from a type of surgical dressing familiar in nineteenth-century Birmingham. Tolkien later noted that he selected the word for its sound, while the character himself reflects the ordinary virtues of the English countryside. Sam eventually becomes mayor of the Shire.
