What is the full name of the company known as 'GE'?

The story behind the answer

The full name of the company known as GE is General Electric.

General Electric was created in 1892 through the combination of Edison General Electric Company and Thomson-Houston Electric Company. Thomas Edison helped establish the Edison company, while Charles Coffin became an important early leader of the combined business. GE grew from an electrical-equipment manufacturer into a sprawling industrial group involved in power generation, aviation, healthcare, appliances, locomotives, lighting, and financial services.

The initials GE became one of the world's most recognizable corporate abbreviations. The company's circular “meatball” monogram was designed in 1899 and has remained closely associated with the brand. GE was also one of the original companies in the Dow Jones Industrial Average when the index was created in 1896.

Modern references can be confusing because GE reorganized and separated major businesses. GE HealthCare became independent in 2023, and GE Vernova separated in 2024. The remaining aviation business became GE Aerospace and retained the General Electric name and GE ticker symbols. “Global Electric” and “General Electronics” are not the company's official name.
