What is the full name of Samwise Gamgee in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings?

The story behind the answer

The full name of Frodo’s companion in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings is Samwise Gamgee.

Samwise is usually called Sam by the other hobbits. He begins the story as Frodo Baggins’s gardener and accompanies him from Hobbiton on the quest to destroy the One Ring. His loyalty becomes essential after the journey grows more dangerous and Frodo is increasingly weakened by the Ring.

Sam briefly carries the Ring after Shelob attacks Frodo in Cirith Ungol. He later returns it to Frodo, because Frodo remains the Ring-bearer chosen to complete the mission. Sam also carries Frodo up the slopes of Mount Doom when Frodo can no longer continue alone.

Hamfast Gamgee, known as the Gaffer, is Sam’s father, not Sam’s full name. Meriadoc Brandybuck and Peregrin Took are the other two hobbits in the Fellowship, but neither is Frodo’s gardener or principal companion.
