What is the full name of Morrissey, formerly of the band The Smiths?

The story behind the answer

The full name of Morrissey, formerly of The Smiths, is Steven Patrick Morrissey.

Born on 22 May 1959 in Old Trafford, Lancashire, he is the son of Irish immigrants and grew up around Manchester. He became famous as the lead singer and lyricist of The Smiths, which he formed with guitarist Johnny Marr in 1982. The band became one of Britain’s most influential alternative-rock acts before splitting in 1987.

Morrissey began his solo career with the album Viva Hate in 1988. Although he is almost universally known simply as “Morrissey,” that is his professional name rather than a shortened form of another surname. A common mix-up is confusing his name with the name of The Smiths’ guitarist, Johnny Marr; Morrissey was the band’s singer and principal lyricist.
