Mater’s first name in Pixar’s Cars movies is Tow.
His full character name is commonly given as Sir Tow Mater, a pun on the phrase “tow mater,” which sounds like “tomato.” Mater is a rusty tow truck from Radiator Springs and is one of Lightning McQueen’s closest friends.
The character’s design and personality combine a weathered work vehicle with an enthusiastic, talkative local resident. His stories often become exaggerated, but the films present him as loyal, brave, and genuinely helpful. In Cars 2, his unusual behavior and accidental involvement in espionage become central to the plot.
Many viewers simply call him Mater, so “Tow” can be overlooked as part of the name. The answer is not “Sir,” which is a title used in the character’s full name rather than his first name.
