What is the first name of Frasier and Niles's father?

The story behind the answer

The first name of Frasier and Niles’s father is Martin. Martin Crane is the retired Seattle police detective at the center of the family’s domestic clashes in Frasier.

Martin was created as a contrast to his highly educated sons. He prefers beer, sports, practical jokes, and his battered recliner, while Frasier and Niles favor opera, fine dining, psychiatry, and intellectual debate. Martin’s injury—a bullet lodged in his hip after he was shot while stopping a robbery—forces him to retire and eventually move in with Frasier.

The character was played by John Mahoney throughout the original series. Martin’s wife, Hester, was the boys’ mother, and he later marries Ronee Lawrence in the series finale. A common mix-up is confusing Martin with Walt, his brother, or Frederick, Frasier’s son. The name also has an early continuity wrinkle: Frasier once claimed in Cheers that his father was dead, but Frasier later established Martin as his living father.
