The first day of Shawwal, the month immediately after Ramadan, is called Eid al-Fitr. It is the festival marking the end of the month-long Ramadan fast.
Because the Islamic calendar is lunar, the beginning of Shawwal is determined by the appearance of the new crescent according to the method followed by a community or national authority. As a result, Eid al-Fitr can begin on different Gregorian dates in different places. The festival itself begins when Shawwal begins, not after a fixed number of solar days.
Eid al-Fitr commonly includes a congregational prayer, charitable giving through zakat al-fitr, family visits, special meals, and greetings. It is distinct from Eid al-Adha, which falls on 10 Dhu al-Hijjah, the final month of the Islamic calendar.
