What is the first book in C.S. Lewis's Chronicles of Narnia series?

The story behind the answer

The first book published in C.S. Lewis’s Chronicles of Narnia is The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.

Published in 1950, the novel introduces the Pevensie children—Peter, Susan, Edmund and Lucy—and their discovery of the magical land of Narnia through a wardrobe. Lucy is the first of the children to enter Narnia, where she meets the faun Mr. Tumnus. The story’s central conflict concerns the White Witch’s rule and the return of Aslan.

The series contains seven books. Lewis’s internal chronology begins with The Magician’s Nephew, but that book was published later, in 1955. This creates a common distinction between publication order and the fictional chronological order of events.

The book became one of the best-known works of twentieth-century children’s literature. Its title refers to three central figures or objects: Aslan, the White Witch and the wardrobe that serves as the children’s route into Narnia.
