The fictional memory device in the Assassin's Creed series is called the Animus.
The Animus allows a user to access genetic memories inherited from ancestors. In the modern-day framing story, characters enter the machine to experience historical events through the lives of people such as Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad, Ezio Auditore, and Connor Kenway.
The device gives the series its distinctive structure: historical adventures are presented as reconstructed memories while modern characters investigate the past. Abstergo Industries develops and operates Animus technology, initially using it to search for information connected to powerful artifacts and ancient conflicts.
The Animus is not the same as an Apple of Eden. Apples are Pieces of Eden, ancient technological artifacts that can influence minds and perform other extraordinary functions. Eagle Vision is instead a perception ability used by several protagonists. The Bleeding Effect describes a side effect of prolonged memory synchronization, not the machine itself.
