What is the fastest snake in the world?

The story behind the answer

The black mamba is widely recognized as the fastest snake in the world. It can move at roughly 16–20 kilometers per hour (about 10–12 miles per hour) over short distances, making it exceptionally quick for a snake.

The black mamba, Dendroaspis polylepis, is native to parts of sub-Saharan Africa. Despite its name, its body is usually gray, olive, or brown; the name refers to the dark interior of its mouth, which it displays when threatened.

Speed is only one reason this snake has such a fearsome reputation. It is long, agile, highly venomous, and capable of raising much of its body while striking. However, black mambas generally prefer escape to confrontation. They often use speed to flee through grassland, woodland, or rocky terrain.

The phrase “fastest snake” normally means fastest over land. Exact speed records vary by source and are difficult to measure consistently, but black mamba remains the standard answer in general-reference works and quiz settings. Green anacondas and king cobras are impressive snakes, but they are not generally ranked as the fastest.
