What is the elevation of Mount Fuji’s summit in Japan?

The story behind the answer

Mount Fuji’s summit elevation is 3,776 metres.

Mount Fuji is Japan’s highest mountain and one of the country’s most recognisable cultural symbols. It is a nearly symmetrical stratovolcano on Honshu, Japan’s largest island, and its summit is capped by a crater created by repeated volcanic activity.

The current mountain formed through several stages of volcanic construction, with the present cone developing over the older Komitake and Ko-Fuji volcanoes. Fuji last erupted in 1707 during the Hōei eruption, which deposited ash over areas including Edo, now Tokyo.

The mountain is often called simply Fuji-san, although “san” can mean either an honorific or “mountain” depending on the written form and context. Mount Fuji is also a UNESCO World Heritage cultural site, recognised for its influence on Japanese art and pilgrimage traditions.
