What is the depth of the Calypso Deep in meters?

The Calypso Deep is 5,109 meters deep. It is the deepest known point in the Mediterranean Sea, located in the Hellenic Trench of the Ionian Sea, southwest of Greece.

The name refers to the deep basin rather than a separate ocean trench. The Hellenic Trench formed where the African Plate is being pushed beneath the Aegean portion of the Eurasian Plate, a process that has created some of the Mediterranean’s deepest seafloor and contributes to the region’s earthquake activity.

A French bathyscaphe called Archimède made the first crewed descent to Calypso Deep in 1965. The crew reported a depth of 5,110 meters, but the measurement lacked a stated accuracy. Modern instruments produced a slightly different figure: on February 10, 2020, Victor Vescovo and Monaco’s Prince Albert II reached the bottom and measured 5,109 meters, with an uncertainty of about one meter.

That small difference explains why older references may list 5,110 or approximately 5,200 meters. The modern direct measurement makes 5,109 meters the best precise answer.
