Answer
Uzbek sum
Answer
Uzbek sum
The currency of Uzbekistan is the Uzbek sum.
Uzbekistan introduced a transitional sum in November 1993 after independence, replacing the Soviet and Russian ruble. The modern sum was introduced on 1 July 1994 at a rate of 1 new sum for 1,000 old sums. Its ISO 4217 code is UZS, and the currency is issued by the Central Bank of Uzbekistan.
The word sum comes from a Turkic term associated with something pure or solid, historically linked to silver or gold. The sum is divided into 100 tiyin, although very small denominations have little practical use today. Uzbekistan’s banknotes commonly feature national symbols, historic architecture and cultural landmarks.
A common mix-up is the Kyrgyz som, used in neighbouring Kyrgyzstan. The names are related linguistically, but they are separate currencies with different codes and monetary authorities.
