What is the currency of Croatia?

The story behind the answer

The currency of Croatia is the euro. Croatia adopted it on 1 January 2023, becoming the 20th member of the euro area.

The euro replaced the Croatian kuna, which had been Croatia’s currency since 1994. The official conversion rate was fixed at €1 = 7.53450 kuna. Kuna cash could be used during a short changeover period, but euro payments became standard after January 2023.

Croatia joined the European Exchange Rate Mechanism II on 10 July 2020 and later met the European Union’s convergence requirements for euro adoption. Euro coins minted for Croatia carry national motifs, including a map of Croatia, a marten, the Croatian checkerboard and the script of inventor Nikola Tesla.

The kuna remains a common historical reference and is therefore an easy distractor in quizzes. Serbia still uses the Serbian dinar, while Switzerland uses the Swiss franc. Croatia’s adoption also brought it into the Schengen Area in 2023, although that is a separate EU integration step from adopting the euro.
