What is the currency of the Isle of Man?

The story behind the answer

The currency of the Isle of Man is the Manx pound.

The Manx pound is issued by the Isle of Man Government and is divided into 100 pence. It has no separate ISO 4217 code and is commonly identified by the abbreviation IMP. Manx notes and coins have the same value as pound sterling because the currency is maintained at parity with sterling.

The Isle of Man also accepts sterling as legal tender, which causes a frequent confusion. British notes and coins can circulate there, but the island issues its own currency, including distinctive banknotes and coins marked for the Isle of Man. Manx notes are not generally legal tender in the United Kingdom.

The island’s currency history reflects its constitutional relationship with Britain. In 1840, British currency was declared the currency of the Isle of Man, and locally issued coinage later returned in decimal form in 1971. Today, Manx money commonly features the island’s triskelion emblem and scenes such as Tynwald Hill, Castle Rushen, and the Laxey Wheel.
