What is the currency of the Philippines?

The story behind the answer

The currency of the Philippines is the Philippine peso.

Known locally as the piso, the peso is issued by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas and uses the international currency code PHP. Its symbol is ₱, a distinctive mark often confused with the dollar sign or other peso currencies. One peso is divided into 100 sentimos, also called centavos in some contexts.

The word peso comes from the Spanish peso, meaning “weight,” reflecting the currency’s historical connection to weighed silver. Spanish colonial money circulated in the islands for centuries, and the modern Philippine peso developed through later American and independent Philippine monetary systems.

The Philippine peso is not the same currency as the Mexican, Chilean, or Uruguayan peso. The Philippines also has several neighboring currencies that can cause confusion: Vietnam uses the dong, Thailand the baht, and Indonesia the rupiah. Philippine banknotes commonly feature national heroes and important cultural or natural symbols.
