What is the currency of the Central African Republic?
Answer
Central African CFA franc
Answer
Central African CFA franc
The currency of the Central African Republic is the Central African CFA franc.
The Central African CFA franc has the ISO code XAF and is used by six members of the Central African Economic and Monetary Community. Alongside the Central African Republic, those countries are Cameroon, Chad, the Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea and Gabon. The currency is issued by the Bank of Central African States, headquartered in Yaoundé, Cameroon.
The franc was introduced in French Equatorial Africa in 1945 and continued after the member countries became independent. Today, it is pegged to the euro at 1 euro = 655.957 CFA francs. This fixed relationship is intended to support monetary stability and convertibility.
The biggest quiz trap is the West African CFA franc, whose ISO code is XOF. The two CFA francs have the same euro value, but they are separate currencies, issued by different central banks and legally used in different regional monetary zones.
