What is the currency of Thailand?

The story behind the answer

The currency of Thailand is the Thai baht. Its international currency code is THB, and its familiar symbol is ฿, although the baht is also written in Thai as บาท.

The baht is divided into 100 satang. In modern daily life, baht-denominated banknotes are far more prominent than small satang coins, but 25- and 50-satang coins still exist. Common Thai banknote denominations include 20, 50, 100, 500, and 1,000 baht.

The word “baht” has historical roots in a traditional unit of weight associated with precious metals. Thailand’s monetary system was decimalized in the late nineteenth century, and the baht became the country’s formal currency unit. The Bank of Thailand is responsible for issuing the nation’s notes, while the Royal Thai Mint produces its coins.

Thailand’s baht should not be confused with the Philippine peso, Indonesian rupiah, or Vietnamese đồng. Another small trap is the symbol ฿: it is most strongly associated with Thailand, though a similar symbol is also used for Panama’s balboa.
