What is the currency of Switzerland?

The story behind the answer

The currency of Switzerland is the Swiss franc.

The Swiss franc is also the legal tender of Liechtenstein, giving it a role beyond Switzerland’s borders. Its international currency code is CHF, based on Confoederatio Helvetica, the Latin name used for Switzerland because the country has several official languages.

The Swiss National Bank issues franc banknotes, while Swissmint produces coins. One franc is divided into 100 centimes in French, centesimi in Italian, or Rappen in German. Banknotes commonly come in denominations from 10 to 1,000 francs.

A common mix-up is the euro: Switzerland is surrounded largely by euro-using countries and accepts euros in some tourist areas, but it is not part of the eurozone. The franc is also legal tender in Campione d’Italia, an Italian exclave surrounded by Switzerland.
