What is the currency of Sweden?

The story behind the answer

The currency of Sweden is the Swedish krona.

The krona was introduced in 1873, replacing the Swedish riksdaler as part of the Scandinavian Monetary Union. Sweden, Denmark, and Norway used related crown currencies, called krona in Sweden and krone in Denmark and Norway. Although the monetary union later ended, Sweden retained the krona.

The currency’s international code is SEK and its symbol is kr. One krona was historically divided into 100 öre, but coins smaller than one krona were discontinued in 2010. Prices may still be displayed using öre, while cash totals are rounded to the nearest krona.

The Swedish krona is not the euro. Sweden joined the European Union but retained its national currency. Swedish banknotes are issued by Sveriges Riksbank, the country’s central bank, and feature notable Swedish people and cultural figures. The plural of krona is kronor.
