What is the currency of Serbia?

The story behind the answer

The currency of Serbia is the Serbian dinar. Its international currency code is RSD, and the National Bank of Serbia issues the country’s coins and banknotes.

The dinar has medieval roots: Serbian rulers were minting silver dinars by 1214. The modern Serbian dinar was reintroduced in 1868 after Prince Mihailo Obrenović sought to replace the mix of foreign currencies circulating after the withdrawal of Ottoman forces. It was later replaced by the Yugoslav dinar in 1920, then returned as Serbia’s currency in its modern form in 2003.

The dinar is divided historically into 100 para, although para coins are no longer used in everyday transactions. A common mix-up is the Macedonian denar, which is the currency of North Macedonia; despite the similar names, it is a separate currency. Serbia’s currency should also not be confused with the euro, used by several nearby countries.
