What is the currency of Russia?

The story behind the answer

The currency of Russia is the Russian ruble.

The Russian ruble, also spelled rouble, has the international code RUB and the symbol ₽. It is issued by the Central Bank of Russia. One ruble is divided into 100 kopecks, although the practical use of very small denominations depends on prices and circulation.

The ruble has deep historical roots in the Russian principalities and became a decimal currency in 1704 during the reign of Peter the Great. That reform is often credited with making it the world’s first decimal currency. The ruble later served as the currency of the Russian Empire and, in a different form, the Soviet Union.

A common mix-up is the yen, dollar, or euro, all major international currencies but not Russia’s official currency. The Soviet ruble was replaced in Russia after the dissolution of the Soviet Union, and the present Russian ruble was introduced in 1992. The word ruble is linked to an old Russian term associated with cutting or chopping silver.
