What is the currency of Hungary?

The story behind the answer

The currency of Hungary is the Hungarian forint.

The forint’s name ultimately comes from Florence, Italy, where gold florins called fiorino d’oro were minted from 1252. Hungary used a related currency name from the 14th century, and the forint was later associated with the Austro-Hungarian gulden.

Hungary reintroduced the modern forint on 1 August 1946 after the pengő was devastated by one of the worst episodes of hyperinflation ever recorded. The new currency helped stabilize the postwar economy. Its international code is HUF, and prices and banknotes commonly use the abbreviation Ft.

A common mix-up is assuming Hungary uses the euro because it is an EU member. Hungary has not adopted the euro, and the forint remains its national currency. The former subdivision, the fillér, has not circulated since 1999.
