What is the currency of Bolivia?

The story behind the answer

The currency of Bolivia is the Bolivian boliviano.

The boliviano is issued by Bolivia’s central bank and is divided into 100 centavos. Its ISO 4217 currency code is BOB, and its symbol is commonly written as Bs. Modern Bolivian banknotes include denominations from Bs10 to Bs200.

Bolivia has used the name boliviano more than once. The first boliviano circulated from 1864 to 1963, when it was replaced by the peso boliviano. After severe inflation, the modern boliviano was introduced on 1 January 1987, replacing the peso at a rate of 1 boliviano to 1,000,000 pesos bolivianos.

A common mix-up is confusing Bolivia’s currency with the currencies of its neighbors. Argentina uses the Argentine peso, Chile uses the Chilean peso, and Peru uses the sol. Bolivia’s historic Potosí mint was once one of the most important sources of silver coinage in the Spanish Empire.
