What is the currency of Bangladesh?

The story behind the answer

The currency of Bangladesh is the Bangladeshi taka. Its international currency code is BDT, and the symbol commonly used for it is ৳ or Tk.

The taka became Bangladesh’s official currency on 4 March 1972, shortly after the country achieved independence. Before then, the Pakistani rupee circulated in East Pakistan, and it continued to be used briefly after independence while Bangladesh established its own monetary system. The taka initially replaced the Pakistani rupee at par.

One taka is divided into 100 poysha, although poysha coins have largely disappeared from ordinary circulation because of inflation and changing prices. Bangladesh Bank controls the issuance of most banknotes, while some low-value government notes have also existed. The word taka is related to older South Asian and Turkic terms for money or coins, so it resembles names such as Kazakhstan’s tenge. It is not the Indian rupee, Pakistani rupee, or Sri Lankan rupee, even though all four currencies are used in South Asia.
