What is the currency of Albania?

The story behind the answer

The currency of Albania is the Albanian lek.

The lek is issued by the Bank of Albania and has the ISO 4217 code ALL. Its traditional subunit is the qindarkë, with 100 qindarka equaling one lek, although qindarka coins have not been practically important in modern circulation. Common denominations include 200, 500, 1,000, 2,000, and 5,000 lekë banknotes.

Albania introduced the lek in February 1926 as its first modern national currency. Before then, people used a mixture of Ottoman, Austro-Hungarian, Italian, and Greek money, along with barter. The name is commonly linked either to Lekë Dukagjini, a medieval Albanian nobleman, or to Leka, the Albanian form of Alexander the Great’s name.

The lek is sometimes confused with the Serbian dinar, Bulgarian lev, or Macedonian denar because Albania is in the Balkans. Those are separate national currencies. The plural forms lekë and lek are both encountered, but “Albanian lek” is the standard English quiz answer.
