What is the country of origin of Fawlty Towers?

The story behind the answer

Fawlty Towers originated in the United Kingdom. It is a British television sitcom created for the BBC and first broadcast on BBC Two.

The series was written by John Cleese and Connie Booth and is set in a fictional hotel in Torquay, Devon, an English seaside town. Its British setting is central to the comedy: Basil Fawlty's anxious attempts to appear refined, his clashes with guests and staff, and the hotel's class-conscious atmosphere all draw on recognizable features of British life and hospitality.

The show's setting was partly inspired by the real Gleneagles Hotel in Torquay. Cleese and other Monty Python members stayed there in 1970, and the hotel's eccentric owner, Donald Sinclair, helped inspire the character of Basil Fawlty. The fictional hotel itself is not a real establishment called Fawlty Towers.

The programme is sometimes confused with later overseas adaptations. The American sitcom Payne, for example, was based on Fawlty Towers, but that adaptation was produced in the United States. The original series remains a British production, with two series and 12 episodes broadcast between 1975 and 1979.
