Answer
Common garter snake
Thamnophis sirtalis is commonly called the common garter snake.
This species is one of North America’s most widespread snakes, occupying habitats that range from meadows and woodland edges to wetlands and suburban gardens. Its name comes from the longitudinal stripes that can resemble the bands once used to hold up stockings.
Color varies substantially among populations. Many individuals have a yellow, cream, or red stripe running along the back, often accompanied by side stripes, but some are much darker. This variation can make identification difficult when people rely only on color.
Common garter snakes are not generally dangerous to humans. They eat earthworms, amphibians, fish, slugs, and other small prey. Unlike many egg-laying snakes, they give birth to live young, producing a litter rather than depositing eggs.
