The chassis code for the third-generation Toyota Supra is A70. Introduced in 1986, the A70 marked the point when the Supra became a separate rear-wheel-drive model rather than simply a longer-roof derivative of the Celica.
Toyota used more precise market and engine-related codes within the A70 family. North American cars commonly carried the MA70 designation, while Japanese versions included the GA70 and JZA70. The JZA70 identified the later 2.5-liter twin-turbo model powered by Toyota’s 1JZ-GTE engine.
The A70 generation used the 3.0-liter 7M-GE or turbocharged 7M-GTE inline-six in many markets and introduced technology such as electronically controlled suspension and available anti-lock brakes. It is commonly confused with the A80, the fourth-generation Supra made famous by its 2JZ engine, or the newer A90/A91 generation.
