What is the charging system that combines Type 1 or Type 2 AC charging with DC fast charging?

The story behind the answer

The Combined Charging System is the charging system that combines Type 1 or Type 2 AC charging with DC fast charging.

CCS uses an AC connector for ordinary charging and adds two large direct-current contacts for rapid charging. The result is one vehicle inlet that can support both slower alternating-current charging and higher-power direct-current charging. CCS1 is associated mainly with North American Type 1 hardware, while CCS2 is based on the European Type 2 connector.

The system was developed by automobile manufacturers and industry organizations and became an important international charging standard during the 2010s. Its design allows the car and charger to communicate about voltage, current, safety, and charging limits.

CCS is different from CHAdeMO, which is a separate DC fast-charging standard, and from the North American Charging Standard, previously known as Tesla's connector standard. A plug's physical shape alone does not determine charging speed; the vehicle, cable, charger, and electrical supply all matter.
