What is the Catholic thanksgiving service sometimes held before a quinceañera reception called?
Answer
Misa de Acción de Gracias
The Catholic thanksgiving service sometimes held before a quinceañera reception is called a Misa de Acción de Gracias.
The Spanish phrase translates as “Mass of Thanksgiving.” In Catholic families, this service gives the quinceañera and her relatives an opportunity to express gratitude and receive a blessing. It may take place in a church before the party or reception.
The religious service is an important traditional element, but it is not universal. Quinceañeras are celebrated by families with different religious backgrounds, and some families hold only a secular reception. Even within Catholic communities, local parishes and families may organize the liturgy differently.
A Misa de Acción de Gracias should not be confused with a wedding Mass. The quinceañera service celebrates a birthday and cultural transition; it does not create a marriage or change the celebrant’s legal status.
