What is the capital of Trinidad and Tobago?

The story behind the answer

The capital of Trinidad and Tobago is Port of Spain.

Port of Spain is the capital and chief port of Trinidad and Tobago. It stands on the Gulf of Paria along the northwest coast of Trinidad and serves as the country’s administrative, commercial, financial, and cultural center. Although its municipal population is smaller than that of some other Trinidadian cities, its metropolitan area is a major urban hub.

The settlement became the island’s de facto capital in 1757, when Governor Don Pedro de la Moneda transferred the seat of government from San José de Oruña, now called Saint Joseph. Port of Spain’s harbor helped make it an important regional shipping and trading center.

The city was also the de facto capital of the short-lived West Indies Federation. Today, it hosts government institutions, financial services, major cultural events, and one of the Caribbean’s important ports. Its name reflects its historical role as a Spanish colonial port.

Scarborough is the capital of Tobago, while Arima and San Fernando are important Trinidadian municipalities. None is the national capital of Trinidad and Tobago.
