Which Canadian territorial capital is on Baffin Island?

The story behind the answer

Iqaluit is the Canadian territorial capital located on Baffin Island.

It sits on Frobisher Bay at the island’s southeastern end and serves as the capital of Nunavut, Canada’s territory created in 1999. Iqaluit is also the largest community in Nunavut and the territory’s principal administrative, transportation, and service centre.

The city was known as Frobisher Bay until 1987, when residents voted to restore the Inuktitut name Iqaluit, meaning “place of many fish.” The settlement’s location connects it to the waters and travel routes around southeastern Baffin Island, an area with a long history of Inuit habitation.

The alternatives point to different northern locations. Rankin Inlet is another Nunavut community but lies on the western shore of Hudson Bay, while Whitehorse is Yukon’s capital and Yellowknife is the capital of the Northwest Territories. Baffin Island itself is part of Nunavut and is Canada’s largest island.
