What is the capital of the Dominican Republic?
Answer
Santo Domingo
Answer
Santo Domingo
The capital of the Dominican Republic is Santo Domingo.
Founded in 1496 by Bartholomew Columbus, Santo Domingo is the oldest continuously inhabited European settlement in the Americas. It stands on the southern coast of Hispaniola, at the mouth of the Ozama River, whose harbor helped the city become an important colonial trading center.
The city's Colonial Zone contains landmarks including the first cathedral, university, monastery, and fortress built by Europeans in the Americas. UNESCO designated the area a World Heritage Site. Santo Domingo is also the Dominican Republic's largest city and its main political, cultural, commercial, and financial center.
Puerto Plata, La Romana, and Santiago de los Caballeros are major Dominican cities, but none is the national capital. Santiago de los Caballeros is the country's second-largest city and the principal urban center of the Cibao Valley.
