What is the capital of the Canadian territory of Yukon?
Answer
Whitehorse
Answer
Whitehorse
The capital of the Canadian territory of Yukon is Whitehorse.
Whitehorse is located in southern Yukon along the Yukon River and is both the territory's capital and its largest city. It serves as Yukon's administrative, transportation, and commercial center. Because Yukon is a territory rather than a province, Whitehorse is specifically a territorial capital.
The settlement grew during the Klondike Gold Rush era and was named for the White Horse Rapids, whose foaming waves were thought to resemble the mane of a charging white horse. The rapids were later submerged by the construction of the Whitehorse hydroelectric dam, but the name remained.
Whitehorse became Yukon's capital on April 1, 1953, when the seat of government moved from Dawson City. Dawson City had been the center of the Klondike Gold Rush and the territorial capital since the late 19th century, but Whitehorse's location and transportation links made it more practical for modern administration. The city was incorporated in 1950 and lies along the historic route of the Alaska Highway.
