What is the capital of the Bahamas?
Answer
Nassau
Answer
Nassau
The capital of The Bahamas is Nassau. The city occupies much of New Providence Island and serves as the country’s political, economic, and tourism hub.
Nassau began as an English settlement called Charles Town in 1670. After the town was destroyed, it was rebuilt and renamed Nassau in 1695, honoring William III, who was also known as Prince of Orange-Nassau. Its position in the Caribbean made it a strategic harbor and, at times, a base for pirates and privateers.
Nassau is often confused with Freeport, the major city on Grand Bahama Island. Freeport is an important industrial and tourism center, but it is not the national capital. Marsh Harbour is the largest town in the Abaco Islands, while West End is another settlement on Grand Bahama. Nassau’s historic landmarks include Parliament Square and Fort Fincastle.
