What is the capital of Texas?

The story behind the answer

Austin is the capital of Texas.

It became the capital of the Republic of Texas in 1839, when the government moved from Houston to the new settlement on the Colorado River. The city was named for Stephen F. Austin, widely called the “Father of Texas.” Austin remained the capital when Texas joined the United States in 1845.

A common mix-up is choosing Houston, Dallas, or San Antonio because they are larger or more nationally prominent Texas cities. Houston is the state’s largest city, while San Antonio and Dallas are major population and business centres. Austin’s role is governmental: it is the seat of the Texas Legislature, governor, and state agencies.
