What is the capital of Saint Kitts and Nevis?

The story behind the answer

What is the capital of Saint Kitts and Nevis? Basseterre is the capital and largest city of Saint Kitts and Nevis, located on the southwest coast of Saint Kitts Island.

Basseterre was founded by the French in 1627 and became an important port in the Eastern Caribbean. It served as the capital of the French colony of Saint-Christophe before British control was established. The city became the capital of the island of Saint Kitts in 1727 and remains the federal capital of the independent two-island nation.

A common mix-up is confusing Basseterre with Charlestown, which is the capital of Nevis, the federation’s other main island. Cayon and Sandy Point are towns on Saint Kitts, but neither is the national capital. Basseterre has suffered repeated destruction from colonial conflict, fires, earthquakes, floods, riots, and hurricanes; much of its present architecture dates from rebuilding after the major fire of 1867.
