What is the capital of Qatar?

The story behind the answer

The capital of Qatar is Doha. It is the country’s largest city and its political, economic, and cultural center.

Doha lies on Qatar’s east coast along the Persian Gulf. The city developed from a small pearling and fishing settlement into a modern capital, especially after Qatar’s oil and natural-gas wealth transformed its economy in the 20th century.

Doha hosts Qatar’s government institutions, major universities, museums, financial districts, and Hamad International Airport. The city also became internationally prominent after hosting the 2006 Asian Games and serving as the main urban center for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Doha is sometimes confused with Al Rayyan, a neighboring municipality that forms part of the wider metropolitan area. Qatar’s capital is specifically Doha, while Al Rayyan is a separate city and municipality west of it.
