What is the capital of Ontario?

The story behind the answer

What is the capital of Ontario? Toronto is the capital of the Canadian province of Ontario.

Toronto sits on the northwestern shore of Lake Ontario and is Canada's most populous city. It is also the country's largest centre for finance, business, culture, media, and higher education. Ontario's provincial government operates from Queen's Park, where the Legislative Assembly of Ontario meets.

Toronto became the provincial capital in the nineteenth century as Ontario developed within the Province of Canada and later Confederation. Its harbour, transportation links, and rapidly expanding population helped make it the province's dominant urban centre.

A common mix-up is Ottawa, which is Canada's national capital, not Ontario's. Hamilton, London, and Kingston are important Ontario cities, but none is the provincial capital. Toronto should therefore be the single canonical answer.
