What is the capital of Oman?

The story behind the answer

Muscat is the capital of Oman and its principal political center.

The city sits on Oman’s Gulf of Oman coast, surrounded in places by rugged mountains. Muscat has been an important port for centuries because its location connects the Arabian Peninsula with maritime routes across the Indian Ocean. Its harbor and coastal position helped Oman develop trading links with East Africa, India, and Persia.

Muscat is different from Salalah, a southern Omani city known for the khareef monsoon season, and from Nizwa, a historic inland center famous for its fort and traditional souq. The metropolitan area includes districts such as Muttrah, where the harbor and traditional market are located. Oman’s modern government institutions and diplomatic missions are concentrated in the capital region.
