What is the capital of Nicaragua?

The story behind the answer

The capital of Nicaragua is Managua.

Managua lies on the southwestern shore of Lake Managua and is both Nicaragua’s capital and largest city. Unlike many capitals that grew around an ancient royal or colonial center, Managua was once a relatively small fishing village. Its central location helped it become a compromise between the rival colonial cities of León and Granada.

Efforts to make Managua the national capital began after Central American independence, and the city was officially selected in 1852. It had been founded as a settlement in 1819, so its rise to capital status came relatively late. The city then expanded rapidly as Nicaragua’s administrative and economic hub.

Managua’s history has been heavily shaped by earthquakes. A major earthquake in 1931 destroyed much of the city, and another devastating earthquake in 1972 caused widespread destruction. This history helps explain Managua’s relatively dispersed layout and the absence of a dense traditional downtown in parts of the city.

Masaya, Granada, and León are historic Nicaraguan cities, but none is the country’s current capital.
