What is the capital of Martinique?
Answer
Fort-de-France
Answer
Fort-de-France
The capital of Martinique is Fort-de-France.
Fort-de-France is the capital and prefecture of Martinique, a French overseas department and region in the Caribbean. Its sheltered position on the Bay of Fort-de-France made it valuable for military defense, administration, and maritime trade.
The settlement was first known as Cul-de-Sac Royal and later Fort-Royal. French authorities established a fort there in the 17th century, and the city officially took the name Fort-de-France in 1807. Fort Saint Louis remains one of its defining landmarks and is still connected with French naval activity.
Fort-de-France became Martinique’s dominant city after the catastrophic 1902 eruption of Mount Pelée destroyed Saint-Pierre, then the island’s leading commercial center. The city is also strongly associated with writer and mayor Aimé Césaire, whose work helped shape the Négritude movement. Cayenne, by contrast, is the capital of French Guiana.
