What is the capital of Illinois?

The story behind the answer

What is the capital of Illinois? Springfield is the capital city of the U.S. state of Illinois.

Springfield is located in central Illinois and is the seat of the state government. The Illinois State Capitol and the Illinois General Assembly are based there, along with the offices and agencies that administer state programs.

Illinois designated Springfield as its capital in 1839, making it the state's third capital. The move was supported by Abraham Lincoln and other legislators known as the “Long Nine,” whose combined height was famously used to promote the relocation from Vandalia. Lincoln lived in Springfield from 1837 until he left for the presidency in 1861.

Chicago is Illinois's largest and best-known city, but it is not the state capital. Peoria and Naperville are also major cities, while Springfield remains the official political centre.
