What is the capital of Idaho?

The story behind the answer

What is the capital of Idaho? Boise is the capital of Idaho.

Boise is located in southwestern Idaho on the Boise River, in the Treasure Valley. It is also Idaho’s most populous city, which makes it both the political center and the state’s main urban hub. The city’s name is commonly associated with the French phrase bois, meaning “woods,” although the exact naming story has been debated.

Boise began as a military outpost in 1863 during the region’s gold-rush era and was incorporated in 1864. Idaho’s territorial capital was initially Lewiston, but lawmakers moved it to Boise on December 24, 1864. Boise retained that role when Idaho became the 43rd U.S. state in 1890.

A frequent quiz mistake is choosing a larger-sounding regional city or confusing the state capital with the location of Idaho’s earlier territorial government. Boise is also known by the nickname “The City of Trees,” reflecting its tree-lined streets and parks.
